Cool Processor !

Heat Sinks

A heat sink by direct contact with the processor conducts heat from the processor into a block of metal .A thermal compound is usually used to aid conduction.

This block of metal with special fin design giving it a large surface area , gives up radiant heat to the ambient .

The metal block can be a variety of different metals but bear in mind the following. in order best to worst

  1. Silver
  2. Copper
  3. Gold
  4. Aluminium

Therefore silver is the most effective!

In order to give better heat transfer many new designs are appearing in the market place . Popular choices include copper plate flower and radial designs.

Types of processor cooling

From best to worst

  1. Liquid Nitrogen
  2. Phase Change
  3. Water Cooled with Peltier
  4. Heat Sink fan cooled Peltier
  5. Water Cooling
  6. Heat Sink and Fan (most common)
  7. Passive heat sink ( No fan )

Number 6 the most popular with 3,4 and 5 used by the enthusiasts
